Darkness In The Desert

Nov 28, 2023

I lingered in my sleeping bag when it hit me. Unmistakable wafts of smoke drifted their way from camp to my nostrils. It was late afternoon on Thanksgiving day and the smell was a signal that someone had lit the night’s fire and that preparations for our evening’s feast were underway.

The first two dutch ovens roasted a pair of chickens while a third baked a mash of squash flavored with cardamom and rosemary. There was stuffing, potatoes, green beans, it was classic Thanksgiving, really.

I sat in a chair next to the fire and reflected on all the gatherings that were happening that evening. The conversations, were awkward and heartfelt alike. The smells, flavors, and messes created. The opportunity for humans to take part in one of our most fundamental and foundational activities, to break bread. Amen.

Coming together to share, converse, and nourish ourselves is what being human is all about. Trip Darkness in Dark Canyon Wilderness is just around the corner. See you there?
