I don't know

Jun 28, 2023

“I don’t know.” She said, the warm orange of the fire dancing on her expressions of sincerity. “I’m working on being okay with the words I don’t know.”

Amidst Unplugged’s closing ceremony last Saturday, whilst wielding the power of the talking piece, and thirty-eight other eyeballs silently screaming ‘we hear you’, Madelyn served up a delectable dose of corazón, free of charge.

I had to chuckle, I couldn’t help it. Madelyn, unbeknownst to her, was constructing the theme for my trip right in front of my eyes.

We all make meaning in different ways, and I wasn’t sure if others were connecting the same dots as me, but I couldn’t not see the writing on the wall.

It started in the opening ceremony with Libby sharing her calling to “go with what feels good”. To follow the golden thread.

And it ended with Conrad, owner of MTB City and Montana legend known for “acting, not thinking”, who slapped us silly with wisdom as he shared tales of his sexcapades and entrepreneurial ups and downs.

“You know, we’re all just floating down the river. Shit becomes a helluva lot easier when we stop grasping for roots and branches and just enjoy the goddamn ride.”

After five days in what felt like a utopian dream, I found less resistance in sharing cheesy cliches– so here we go.

As predictable as life can feel sometimes, and as rooted as we feel in our day-to-day, we mustn’t forget that we’re all just spinning on a ball in an ever-expanding universe and no one knows how we even got here.

We don’t know.

So instead of pretending, and instead of seeking to secure that which is innately insecure, let’s lean into the beauty of “we don’t know.”

And I sense it’ll help to have each other's back along the way.

One way that you can have Unplugged’s back is to help with marketing. We are trying to make something here, and you, dear friends, are our marketing. We refuse to use social media and believe in the power of word of mouth, so if you feel so moved please tell the others.

We’ll be hosting field trips each season. If you find yourself talking with someone who’s interested in joining us on a future field trip, please have them send us a note at tripsunplugged@gmail.com.

The second way you can have our back is by giving your honest feedback from the trip by completing the short survey here.

Finally, we are putting together funds to compensate the true legends, Dani and Rhyno, for all their generosity and to cover their trip expenses.

If you feel the value from the Solstice Trip was worth more than the two Benjamins you threw down, please Venmo Lucas whatever you feel is fair.

Our next Unplugged Field Trip will be held 10/4 - 10/8 with a similar yet unique format. The Harvest Trip will be held in Peacham, VT at the peak of fall. To reserve your spot for the next field trip, click here.

Much love.

PS: If you have photos from the trip, feel free collaborate to the shared folder here. And if you’re looking to score digits from anyone on the trip, all contact info can be found here.
